Maritime Communities

Check out the University of Southampton www.maritimebritain.org website, SSFC are one of the partners in a major research project which covers the period 1588 (Spanish Armada) to 1750 (The Seven Years War) when England went from being an insignificant country on the edge of the known world to a global superpower. We have produced short films featuring Southampton people who lived through these great events and this summer we are creating a new piece of street theatre and a short feature film, watch this space for details of performances, screens and a study day supported by a generous grant from the Hampshire Archives Trust

  1. This project sounds fascinating! It’s incredible to see how England transformed from a minor nation to a global superpower during that period. The short films and street theatre must bring history to life in such an engaging way—I’d love to know more about the people from Southampton who are featured in the films. How did you decide on the specific events or individuals to focus on? The support from the Hampshire Archives Trust is a great addition, but I wonder if there are plans to expand this project beyond 1750? Also, the use of cookies seems well-explained, but do you find that visitors often adjust their cookie preferences, or do most stick with the default settings? Overall, this seems like a brilliant initiative—history presented in such a dynamic way always sparks curiosity!
