In Partnership with God’s House Tower, an Armada Festival Event
If the Spanish had been successful in capturing the Isle of Wight, this would have formed a bridgehead into England via Southampton. The local population had been preparing for invasion, the men training at musters and relying on the expertise of the town gunners who were based at God’s House Tower to help repeal the invaders.

God’s House Tower was originally built to defend God’s House Gate and the town moat and provide a revolutionary gun battery designed to repel invaders. In later years it became a prison and warehouse until it was restored and transformed by aspace arts into an arts & heritage centre. It combines contemporary art galleries with a permanent exhibition on the history of the tower from the Middle Ages to the present day. It also has a café situated in the original gun powder store.
